Audiovisual productions of and about Carolina Maria de Jesus
The year following the release of "Quarto de Despejo," in 1961, Carolina had her book adapted for the theater. The play "Quarto de Despejo" premiered on April 27, 1961, at the Bela Vista Theater in São Paulo. The production was directed by Amir Haddad, with the stage adaptation by Edy Lima. Cyro Del Nero handled the set design, and Nydia Licia was responsible for production.
The cast featured around forty actors, with Ruth de Souza portraying the role of Carolina.
In 1971, the German director Christa Gottman-Elter directed the documentary "Favela - Das Leben in Armut" ("Favela, Life in Poverty"). The screening of this documentary in Brazil was allegedly banned by the Brazilian ambassador in Berlin at the time. It wasn't until 2014 that it had its first showing in Brazil, thanks to efforts by the Instituto Moreira Salles, which acquired, restored, and subtitled a copy of the film.
The Vida por Escrito project also received a donation of the film from Mr. Marcus Misch (Trier Mediazentrum, Germany), and it is now part of the Acervo de Escritores Mineiros at the Federal University of Minas Gerais.

In 1983, the television series "Caso Verdade" (True Case) aired a version of "Quarto de Despejo - From Paper Picker to Famous Writer", broadcast by Rede Globo from March 7th to 11th.
In 2003, Jeferson De directed the documentary "Carolina," featuring Zezé Mota and Gabrielly de Abreu. The film won the Best Short Documentary award at the Gramado Film Festival.
